Danish broadcaster DR has appointed Naja Nielsen as its new content director, effective 1 October, the company announced in a press release on Tuesday.

Nielsen, who previously served as DR’s news editor from 2015 to 2017, joins from Swedish public broadcaster SVT, where she has held the position of media director since June 2025. Her role at DR will oversee news, culture, children and youth programming, as well as publishing and audience engagement.

The appointment follows a restructuring of DR’s executive team under director-general Bjarne Corydon, who introduced a streamlined leadership model in March as part of the broadcaster’s “Forskellige Sammen” (Different Together) strategy. The changes eliminated the standalone news director position, which had been vacant since the dismissal of former news director Sandy French in November 2025.

DR’s board emphasised the need for a “visionary profile with experience from other strong public service media” to navigate evolving media habits ahead of 2030. “There are few candidates in this country better suited than Naja Nielsen to take on this responsibility,” said director-general Corydon, highlighting her ability to strengthen DR’s competitive edge while uniting the organisation.

Before SVT, Nielsen led digital transformation at BBC News as its digital director from 2019. Her career spans leadership roles in public service media, with a focus on digital services, AI, data, and cross-platform content development.
