A tractor pull competition will take place on the small Danish island of Endelave this summer after Horsens Municipality granted an exemption from local zoning laws, reports DR.
The municipality’s Planning and Roads Committee approved the event on Tuesday, despite objections from residents and environmental concerns. Endelave, a quiet island with around 150 permanent residents, lies roughly 10 kilometres off the coast near Horsens Fjord.
Local resident Lars Peter Møller criticised the decision, arguing the event contradicts the island’s focus on tranquillity and nature. “People will come here and create terrible noise and chaos in the middle of tourist season,” he said. “It will harm the kind of tourism we actually want—one based on nature, reflection, and peace.”
Public consultation on the event received 12 responses, with eight from private individuals and four from local associations. Key concerns included noise, pollution, wildlife disruption, traffic safety, and strain on ferry capacity.
Jakob Bille (LA), chair of the Planning and Roads Committee, acknowledged the noise but downplayed its impact. “Of course it will be loud, but we’re talking about a five-to-six-hour event. Both wildlife and people will survive,” he said, calling it “a few hours of good entertainment.”
Organisers have planned extra ferry crossings to manage visitor numbers, with tractors arriving throughout the week. The event is scheduled for 18 July between 10:00 and 18:00.
SF councillor Paw Hedegaard Amdisen voted against the exemption, warning it could set a precedent. “On its own, it may not cause major harm, but it represents a trend we oppose,” he said.
Arranger Michael Mortensen declined to comment when contacted by DR.
