Horsens to host world badminton championships
The Danish city of Horsens will welcome the world’s top badminton players on 24 April as it hosts the BWF World Championships, with preparations now underway at Forum Horsens, DR reports.
The event marks a significant step up from last year’s European Championships, also held in the city. “We’ve been upgraded to hosting the World Championships, and that’s exceptionally big—both for Forum Horsens and for the entire city, including the local badminton club,” said Martin Bjørn, director of Forum Horsens.
Organisers expect global broadcast coverage reaching around one billion viewers, offering Horsens a major international platform. “We’ll spend the next two weeks preparing to welcome spectators, players arriving in about ten days, and setting up a massive TV production,” Bjørn added.
The championships will rely heavily on volunteers, with over 2,000 already signed up—double last year’s number. Julie Homann Carøe, communications advisor for Horsens Municipality, noted that while 2,400 volunteers are needed, the response has been strong. “We couldn’t do this without them,” she said, highlighting roles from logistics and parking to venue operations.
Last year’s European Championships were praised as “world-championship worthy” by Badminton Denmark, and organisers aim to replicate that success on a larger scale. The event begins on 24 April.
