A 60-year-old man from Kuopio appeared in North Savo District Court on Tuesday, accused of systematically stealing mail from residents in Suonenjoki over more than two decades, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.

The prosecution alleges the man took an estimated 8,000 letters, packages, and newspaper deliveries between 2000 and 2023, preventing hundreds—or potentially thousands—of recipients from receiving their intended post. Investigators discovered the stolen items during a search of the suspect’s home in autumn 2023, where they found a “truckload” of undelivered mail.

Charges include aggravated interference with communications, multiple counts of theft, concealment of stolen goods, violation of communication secrecy, and a firearms offence. Prosecutors are seeking at least a one-year suspended prison sentence, combined with either community service or fines.

The defendant has admitted to most of the allegations but disputes compensation claims from Finland’s postal service, Posti, and police for costs incurred in re-sorting and redistributing the recovered mail. The case emerged after a local resident reported missing items from her property, leading police to the suspect’s home, where they also found stolen goods including trailers and lawnmowers.

Posti confirmed in December that it had begun returning the recovered mail to its rightful owners, a process that took months to complete.
