A fuel tank leak spilled around 2,000 litres of heating oil into the ground in Mustasaari, western Finland, on Tuesday, Yle reports. Emergency services are working to prevent the oil from spreading into the nearby Kyrö River.

The Ostrobothnia Emergency Services received an alert about the spill on Staversbyvägen road before 6 PM local time. Responders are using a vacuum truck to collect oil from the water surface and excavating contaminated soil with a digger.

Duty fire chief Terence Sam told Yle that leaks of this scale occur “a few times a year” in the region. The cause of the spill remains unclear, but authorities confirmed there are no groundwater areas near the affected site.
