Ukraine war becomes live testing ground for global arms manufacturers

The war in Ukraine has turned the battlefield into a real-world testing site for international weapons manufacturers, including Swedish firms, according to a report by SVT Nyheter. Researchers say the conflict is accelerating military technology development as companies gain access to combat-proven feedback.

Ukraine has established a state-run testing center, Brave1, to streamline foreign defense firms’ ability to trial prototypes and developmental weapons in active combat. Over 100 companies are already conducting tests, with thousands more in line, according to the center’s CEO, Andrii Hrytseniuk.

“If companies want to lead—or even remain competitive—in the defense industry, they must be here,” Hrytseniuk said. “There’s no other way to keep pace with the rapid advancements.”

Swedish firms, operating with government approval, are among those testing systems in Ukraine, often with the goal of later donating the technology as part of Sweden’s military aid. While exact numbers remain undisclosed, sources tell SVT a “handful” of Swedish companies are involved.

Martin Lundmark, a researcher at the Swedish Defence University, notes that Sweden’s weapons development has stagnated in recent decades due to a lack of urgency. “Now, the situation has changed,” he said. “The pace must increase to counter emerging threats.”

The testing arrangement benefits both sides, Hrytseniuk explained: Ukraine receives advanced equipment faster, while manufacturers save time, resources, and costs compared to traditional field trials. Lundmark added that the Swedish Armed Forces could ultimately benefit by adopting systems already proven against Russian forces.

Ukraine’s demand for detailed performance data on donated weapons has become a key condition in Sweden’s military support agreements, further driving the collaboration.
