Rescue services return lost seal pup to the sea in Kokkola
Emergency responders in Kokkola helped a lost grey seal pup return to the sea on Saturday after it was found wandering in a residential yard near the shore, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The Central Ostrobothnia rescue department received a call about the stranded pup, known locally as a kuutti, on Valkamaku Street, close to the coastline. Authorities confirmed the animal was safely guided back to the water with relative ease.
Grey seals in Finnish waters typically give birth in late winter or early spring. According to the Helsinki Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital, pups become independent at around one month old and begin fending for themselves.
While seal pups resting on coastal rocks usually do not require intervention, experts advise monitoring the situation if the animal appears underweight or has strayed far from the sea. The Wildlife Hospital recommends contacting professionals for guidance before attempting to assist, as unnecessary interference can cause stress to the animal.
