Coalition talks resume with tax disputes and budget disagreements

Talks between the Faroese Centre Party (Fólkaflokkurin), Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin), and Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) resumed Saturday morning as negotiators work to finalise a coalition agreement, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.

Beinir Johannesen, the lead negotiator, confirmed that tax policy remains one of the key unresolved issues, alongside broader budget disagreements. When pressed for details on where the negotiations stand, he declined to elaborate, stating only: “No.”

The Centre Party leader expressed hope that a draft agreement could be reached by Saturday evening, though he acknowledged the timeline depends on progress in the talks.

Johannesen has until April 10 to form a new government. If unsuccessful, he may request an extension from Bjørt Samuelsen, Speaker of the Faroese Parliament (Løgtingið). Three working days remain before the deadline.

The negotiator also confirmed that structural reforms are part of the discussions.
