Faroe Islands ferry cancels sailings leaving 400 passengers stranded
A technical failure aboard the Faroese ferry Smyril forced the cancellation of two Saturday sailings, stranding around 400 passengers, national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The ferry operator Strandferðslan announced the cancellation of the 08:30 departure from Krambatangi and the 11:00 sailing from Tórshavn after a mechanical fault was detected in the vessel’s cooling system. Acting director Dánjal Samuelsen confirmed repairs are underway but could not specify when the ferry would return to service.
Passengers originally scheduled to travel on Smyril were prioritised for alternative transport. The airline Atlantic Airways added an extra flight between Vágar and Tórshavn at 10:30 to accommodate stranded travellers, with 14 seats allocated for those most urgently needing to reach their destinations. Passengers were advised to arrive at the check-in desk at least 30 minutes before departure.
Strandferðslan emphasised that travellers with time-sensitive connections, particularly those with international flights, would receive priority rebooking.
