The Faroe Islands has been allocated a 3,433-tonne cod quota for the Flemish Cap fishing grounds east of Canada, an increase of 614 tonnes from last year, Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The quota announcement, which regulates fishing rights in the area, is now in effect. It applies to Faroese vessels with existing annual cod quotas for Flemish Cap or those that have acquired such rights.

This year’s allocation marks the second-largest cod quota since fishing resumed on Flemish Cap in 2010.

Additionally, the Faroe Islands holds an 80-tonne cod quota on Grand Bank until 15 April, shared among vessels. Quotas for Greenland halibut (187 tonnes) and redfish (69 tonnes) remain unchanged from last year.
