Danish car dealerships are reporting unprecedented demand for electric vehicles as record-high fuel prices push more drivers to switch, public broadcaster DR reports.

Sales staff at Via Biler in Silkeborg—located in “Bilernes By” (Car City)—say they were overwhelmed by customers last weekend, with many citing fuel costs as their primary motivation. The dealership now expects another busy Easter weekend as buyers rush to sign contracts for electric models.

“Customers are coming in with calculations already done at home, showing how much they’d save by switching,” said Anders Bremer Vestergaard, sales manager at Via Biler. He noted that decisions that once took multiple visits are now being made in a single day. “The biggest challenge is keeping enough stock to meet demand.”

Industry data underscores the shift: private registrations of new electric cars jumped from 7,280 in March 2025 to 11,042 this March—a 52% increase. Electric vehicles now account for over 95% of all new private car registrations, up from 80% last year.

Online marketplace Bilbasen recorded a 19% rise in electric car searches between weeks 10 and 13 of this year. “We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Jan Lang, the platform’s market analyst.

Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark, attributed the acceleration to fuel price shocks. “People already knew their next car would be electric, but the spikes are making them act faster.”

Toyota’s bZ4X was Denmark’s top-selling electric model in Q1 2026, with 3,344 units sold.
