Street cleaning efforts and rainfall are expected to improve air conditions across Finland, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, as reported by national broadcaster Yle.
High concentrations of street dust have been recorded as far north as Kemi, with air quality rated as satisfactory or poor in many areas—even reaching “very poor” levels in high-traffic zones over the past three weeks. While larger cities have more robust cleaning equipment, researcher Katri Kyllönen notes that the issue extends beyond urban centers.
Rainfall is set to bring relief by clearing both street dust and pollen from the air, benefiting allergy sufferers and the general public alike. Air quality typically improves further from roads and remains good in less trafficked areas.
Pollen levels vary by region, with alder pollen ranging from low to moderate in southern Finland and abundant in central regions, North Ostrobothnia, and Kainuu. Some pollen has also reached Lapland, with occasional moderate spikes. However, birch allergy sufferers face a milder season this year, as the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) reports record-low birch flowering, with pollen counts expected to stay minimal.
