A mapping of opposition figures, dormant terror cells, and alleged assassination plots—recent years have seen increasingly serious revelations about the Iranian regime’s activities in Sweden. In interviews with public broadcaster SVT Nyheter, four Swedish residents describe how their lives have been constrained by threats and harassment linked to Iran.

Four voices on the threats from Iran

The activist: “I haven’t lived a normal life” – Aron Verständig, a Jewish community leader, describes constant security concerns after years of public criticism of Iran’s regime.

The Iran expert: “Targeted in an assassination attempt” – Mojtaba Ghotbi, a researcher specialising in Iranian affairs, recounts surviving a planned attack.

The politician: “I can’t leave my home” – Alireza Akhondi, a municipal council member for the Moderate Party, explains how threats have forced him into isolation.

The Jewish community leader: “It’s deeply unsettling” – Aron Verständig, chair of the Jewish Central Council, details the broader climate of fear among Swedish Jews due to Iranian-linked intimidation.

The testimonies come amid growing scrutiny of Iran’s influence operations in Sweden, including reports of surveillance and attempts to silence dissent within the diaspora.
