Faroese fire suppression system for lithium batteries presented at IMO conference
A Faroese-developed fire suppression system designed to extinguish lithium battery fires has been presented at an International Maritime Organization (IMO) conference in London, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The system, named Battery Briner, addresses a critical challenge: lithium battery fires burn at extremely high temperatures, making traditional extinguishing methods ineffective. According to Bjarni í Dali, an engineer with Battery Briner, representatives attended the IMO conference last month to showcase the technology.
If approved by the IMO next year, the system could be deployed on ships and on land. While currently in use on only one vessel, Battery Briner has demonstrated effectiveness in tests, the company states.
