Tent repair specialists thrive as camping season peaks in Iceland
Tent repair specialists are experiencing a busy season as camping time peaks in Iceland. A mother-daughter duo in Akureyri is managing various tasks in their workshop, although repairing zippers and torn tent walls dominate their summer workload.
Helga Sigríður Helgadóttir, a seamstress from Akureyri, noted that there is very little that cannot be fixed. Customers flock to Seglið, their sewing workshop, where they offer tent repairs. The unpredictable Icelandic weather often calls for maintenance, prompting Helga and her daughter Anna Margrét Sigurgeirsdóttir to do their best to salvage these camping essentials.
Recent reports highlighted that some campsites in northern Iceland had to close due to inclement weather. Helga remarked that not only do expensive caravans require maintenance, but traditional A-frame tents are making a comeback. She frequently sees people bringing in old tents, and she believes that there’s not much that cannot be repaired or at least attempted.
During a visit from a news team, Helga and Anna were also working on covers for horse trailers and marked horse jackets, but tent repairs were taking precedence as the camping season reaches its peak.
In the face of challenges posed by Iceland’s climate, these seamstresses embody resilience and resourcefulness, ensuring that campers can continue to enjoy the great outdoors, even when the weather turns.
