Many residents of Kouvola initially mistook the fighter jet activity on Sunday for a routine exercise, only to later learn that a Ukrainian drone had crashed in a nearby forest, Yle reports.

The drone was discovered in the Savisto area of Kouvola on Sunday morning, with Finnish authorities confirming its Ukrainian origin. For safety reasons, the device was detonated by Finnish officials later that evening.

Vesa Huuskonen, Kouvola’s security director and a former border guard officer, stated that such incidents were predictable given the ongoing conflict. He criticised the slow response from authorities in informing both the city and its residents. “Of course, it would be good if we received information about such cases at a very early stage,” Huuskonen said, noting that Kouvola was only notified late Sunday morning, delaying the city’s own response measures.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo addressed the situation in a press conference on Tuesday, acknowledging that the war had “come close” and its effects were now being felt within Finland’s borders. He assured the public that while the global security situation remains unstable, “Finns can still sleep peacefully at night.”

Huuskonen called for clearer communication protocols, suggesting that local representatives should be included in state briefings to ensure real-time updates. He also emphasised the need for municipalities to strengthen public resilience in such scenarios.

Finland plans to introduce a drone alert system for mobile phones by 2027, similar to Ukraine’s existing app that warns citizens of incoming drones. A second drone was also reported down in Luumäki on Sunday, though no further devices have entered Finnish airspace since.
