Powerful blasting at a quarry on the Åland Islands on Tuesday caused ground tremors measuring 1.3 on the Richter scale and produced explosions loud enough to be heard over a wide area, according to Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The Seismological Institute confirmed the tremors after receiving notification from the company responsible for the controlled detonations. Institute director Suvi Heinonen suggested that weather conditions may have amplified the sound, carrying it farther than usual.

Local emergency services in Mariehamn reported no incidents or calls related to the blasting. The news was first reported by the local newspaper Ålands Tidningen.
