New integration coordinator appointed for northern Faroe Islands
A new integration coordinator has been appointed to oversee seven municipalities in the northern Faroe Islands, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Sóley Sjúrðaberg from Leirvík will take up the position on 1 May, covering the municipalities of Fugloyar, Viðareiði, Hvannasund, Kunoy, Klaksvík, Fuglafjørður, and Eystur. The combined population of these areas is approximately 10,500 people.
The 41-year-old Sjúrðaberg holds a master’s degree in health sciences and has trained as an occupational therapist. Her role, based in Klaksvík, will involve coordinating integration services, promoting integration initiatives, and liaising with newcomers across the region.
The appointment follows a 2024 integration law requiring all Faroese municipalities to have an integration coordinator in place by 1 July 2026. The legislation also permits municipalities to collaborate on integration efforts and share coordinators.
