Eirikur í Jákupsstovu has secured a seat in the Faroese parliament after a vote recount reversed his initial loss, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The recount, conducted following the Faroese general election, awarded Eirikur nine additional votes, bringing his total to 313. This placed him ahead of Jóhan Christiansen, who lost his seat after his vote count dropped to 309.
Eirikur, representing the left-wing Republic party, initially appeared to have missed out on a parliamentary seat after receiving 304 votes on election day, placing him seventh on his party’s list. However, the recount shifted the outcome in his favour.
“I am surprised, but also happy to be elected and to have emerged from the political abyss,” Eirikur told Kringvarp Føroya.
Jóhan Christiansen, who had been elected with 307 votes on election day, lost his seat after the recount reduced his total by two votes.
