Finland’s wildfire season has started earlier than normal this year, with the first ground fire warnings issued ahead of the typical mid-April schedule, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Warnings are currently in effect for the regions of Päijät-Häme, Kymenlaakso, and South Karelia. The institute assesses fire risk in spring based on the moisture levels of dead grass, which dries quickly but becomes less flammable even after light rainfall.

“Forecasts always carry uncertainty, so it’s crucial to check active warnings before lighting any open fires,” said meteorologist Tuomo Bergman in a statement.

During ground fire warnings, open fires—including campfires and disposable grills—are prohibited. Those who light fires remain responsible for their safe use and extinguishment. The meteorological institute notes that most wildfires in Finland are caused by human activity.

Active warnings can be checked on the institute’s website.
