Ukrainian AN196 drone identified in southern Finland field
The Finnish Air Force has confirmed that one of two drones found near Kouvola, southern Finland, is a Ukrainian-made AN196 long-range unmanned aerial vehicle, public broadcaster Yle reports.
The AN196 drone, designed by Ukrainian manufacturer Antonov and produced by Airmobi, has a wingspan of 6.7 metres and a body length of 4.4 metres. According to specifications, the drone weighs between 250–300 kilograms and has an operational range of 1,000–2,000 kilometres.
The model employs artificial intelligence, satellite navigation, and inertial guidance systems, enabling high-precision deep-strike capabilities. Airmobi states that AN196 drones have played a key role in Ukrainian offensive operations, particularly in strikes against Russian oil refineries and industrial facilities.
In November 2024, a drone of the same type reportedly struck an oil refinery in Saratov, Russia. Earlier in February, similar drones caused damage to Metafrax chemical plant in Russia’s Perm region, according to Ukrainian media outlet United24.
