Faroese prime minister resigns after failing to form new government

Faroese Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen has resigned after informing the speaker of parliament that he would not form a new government, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports.

Johannesen met with Bjørt Samuelsen, speaker of the Faroese parliament (Løgting), at 9 a.m. on Saturday to announce his decision. He had been tasked with forming a government following recent parliamentary elections.

At 11 a.m., representatives from the seven political parties in the Løgting began individual meetings with Samuelsen to declare their positions on coalition negotiations.
