Faroese Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen has resigned after informing the speaker of the Faroese parliament, the Løgting, that he would not form a new government, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports.
Johannesen met with Speaker Bjørt Samuelsen at 9 a.m. on Saturday to announce his decision. Following his resignation, consultations began at 11 a.m. with parliamentary group leaders, who will now indicate to Samuelsen which party should lead coalition negotiations.
The move comes after the Faroese general election, where Johannesen’s party failed to secure sufficient support to continue in government.
