Recent shootings a predicted setback, says criminologist

The latest spate of fatal shootings represents an expected reversal of a temporary decline in gun violence, according to criminologist Manne Gerell, though he expressed surprise at the profile of the suspected perpetrators, reports Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

Four people have died in multiple shootings over a short period, ending a rare lull in gun-related deaths during the first months of the year. Gerell described the resurgence as “a predicted setback,” noting that the unusually low levels of violence earlier in 2026 were unlikely to be sustained long-term.

“An exceptionally low rate cannot persist over time, in my assessment,” he told SVT.

What did come as a surprise, Gerell said, was the involvement of two young girls among the suspects.

“It is unusual for girls—and particularly girls this young—to be drawn into such severe violence. However, we are talking about very few individuals, so we should avoid overinterpreting this for now,” he added.
