Social Democrats gain ground in Faroese local election

Faroe Islands

The Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) has strengthened its position in the Faroese municipality of Vágur, outperforming its results in the 2022 national parliamentary election, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

While the party saw an increase in support, the People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin) lost ground—contrary to earlier polling predictions. The Republic party (Tjóðveldi) also declined in votes, despite fielding two well-known local candidates, Dennis Holm and Sirið Stenberg.

Sólvit Nolsøe, the party’s nominee, attributed the shift to public debate over the Suðuroy Tunnel project.
