The Faroese independence party Sjálvstýri appears set to return to the Faroese parliament after losing its seats in the 2022 election, according to preliminary vote counts reported by Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

With half of the votes counted in Thursday’s parliamentary election, the party has secured 3.2 percent of the vote—just above the 3 percent threshold required for representation. The result suggests a strong likelihood of regaining seats in the Løgting, the Faroe Islands’ legislature.

Sjálvstýri, one of the oldest political parties in the Faroes, was founded as a split from the Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin) and has long been a fixture in Faroese politics. Its exclusion from parliament in 2022 had left its future uncertain.

The final outcome remains subject to change as additional votes are tallied.
