Helsinki has announced the reopening of basketball hoops in Haag, which were previously closed due to noise complaints from nearby residents. The city had initially restricted the use of the basketball stands located at North Haaga Elementary School and Haaga Middle School, citing disruptions caused by noise.

Mikko Ravantti, the acting head of the city’s environment department, acknowledged that the decision to close the hoops was an overreaction and accepted responsibility for the error. He noted the city takes the feedback regarding nighttime noise seriously, which has led to the development of new guidelines for the use of the courts.

According to the city, the obstacles blocking the basketball stands will be removed within the day. Furthermore, the city recommends that games be played between 7 AM and 10 PM, with specific guidelines for different locations. For instance, in proximity to care facilities, play is advised to cease by 9 PM.

Earlier reports indicated that the city had prohibited basketball in North Haaga, Puotila, and Malmi due to noise complaints, igniting lively discussions on social media. By Monday afternoon, it became clear that at least the basketball hoops at North Haaga School had been reopened. However, as of Monday, the city had not confirmed whether these actions were initiated by the authorities or if they had been undertaken independently by residents.
