Birch allergy sufferers face record-low pollen season this spring

Birch pollen allergy sufferers in Finland can expect significant relief this spring, as the birch flowering season is projected to be the weakest in nearly five decades, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

The institute’s 48-year monitoring program shows that only 2013 saw a similarly low birch pollen count. The reduced flowering also means fewer seeds will disperse in autumn, affecting natural forest regeneration.

Other major tree species will also see below-average pollen levels this spring. Norway spruce flowering is expected to be weak nationwide, while Scots pine flowering will be lower than usual. However, pine is forecast to produce an abundant seed crop, which supports natural forest renewal.

Regional differences will affect spruce seed production, with moderate yields expected in southern Finland and none in the north.
