SVT outlines strict policy for publishing opinion polls ahead of election year
Swedish public broadcaster SVT has detailed its approach to reporting opinion polls as election interest grows, emphasizing transparency and methodological rigor in its selection process, SVT Nyheter reports.
With election years bringing a surge in both the number of polls and public interest, SVT News has established clear guidelines for which surveys it publishes. Key criteria include neutral question phrasing, objective response options, and the absence of conflicts of interest from the commissioning party. The broadcaster also requires that participants be randomly selected—excluding self-recruited web panels, which it deems unreliable for representing broader public opinion.
Only a limited number of institutes meet SVT’s standards, including the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB), Novus, Ipsos, Infostat, Indikator Opinion, and Verian. The broadcaster exercises particular caution with party sympathy polls outside its monthly Väljarbarometer collaboration with Verian, demanding both high news value and full compliance with quality requirements before publication.
Factors such as sample size, dropout rates, and margin of error are critical in the evaluation. While dramatic shifts in poll results may warrant coverage, SVT prioritizes statistically significant changes and clearly communicates when findings fall within the margin of error. Full transparency—including methodology, sample details, questions, response options, and survey periods—is provided for its Verian polls to maintain public trust.
“The goal is for audiences to follow opinion trends during the election campaign while trusting that the polls we publish meet high-quality standards,” said Karin Ekman, head of SVT News and editor-in-chief.
