Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has convened a meeting with the leaders of all parliamentary parties to establish a common position on nuclear weapons, reports national broadcaster Yle. The discussions focus on proposed legislative changes that would remove legal barriers to hosting nuclear arms in Finland during peacetime.

Orpo stated the meeting aims to agree on “basic principles” regarding nuclear weapons. He emphasised that Finland does not seek to deploy nuclear arms on its territory and remains committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, according to a government press release.

The proposed amendments to Finland’s nuclear energy and criminal laws would eliminate current legal restrictions on the presence of nuclear weapons in the country outside wartime conditions.
