A couple with average earnings in the Finnish city of Mikkeli will pay nearly €4,000 more in income tax this year than an equivalent couple in Helsinki, according to a comparison by the Finnish Taxpayers’ Association.

The analysis found that a dual-income household earning a combined €97,000 annually—the median wage for men and women in 2024, per Statistics Finland—would pay over €29,000 in total taxes and tax-like fees if residing in Mikkeli. In Helsinki, the same household would pay just over €25,000.

The figures include income tax as well as other mandatory contributions. The Taxpayers’ Association compared tax burdens across Finland’s regional centers, identifying Mikkeli as the most expensive for working taxpayers and Helsinki as the least.
