14-year-old remains in hospital after school stabbing as headteacher says situation exaggerated
A 14-year-old student stabbed in the hallway of Maatulli Comprehensive School in Helsinki on Monday remains hospitalised in stable condition, while police have detained a 15-year-old suspect on charges of attempted manslaughter, Yle reports.
The incident followed a series of conflicts between students over the previous week, according to police. Investigators describe the stabbing as serious but isolated, with no evidence of premeditation.
Three students were involved in the violence, which began when one 15-year-old punched another. The victim of the punch then stabbed a 14-year-old bystander, leaving both injured seriously enough to require hospital treatment. The stabbing suspect remains in custody, while the student who threw the punch is under investigation for assault but has not been detained.
Helsinki Police Chief Inspector Jari Korkalainen confirmed the victim’s condition is stable but serious. Authorities will decide whether to seek pretrial detention for the 15-year-old suspect, though Korkalainen noted that “there must be weighty grounds” for detaining a minor.
School principal Heli Siljama said classes resumed as normally as possible on Tuesday, with staff focusing on crisis support. A debriefing session with police was held for students, many of whom were shaken by the event.
“We’re happy the victim is recovering but saddened for both children—the perpetrator and the victim,” Siljama said. She stressed the need for parental involvement in preventing violence, adding: “Disagreements must never be resolved through physical confrontation. There must be forgiveness.”
Police reports indicate multiple physical altercations between groups of students in the week leading up to the stabbing, though Siljama disputed claims of widespread unrest at the school. “The situation has been exaggerated in public discussion,” she said, noting that while two students had a dispute, their behaviour had not previously been threatening.
Investigators are examining whether bullying or broader conflicts motivated the attack. The weapon used—a bladed instrument—has been seized, but further details remain undisclosed as the probe continues.
