A 20-year-old man from Tampere is facing trial in Pirkanmaa District Court for a series of sexual offences, including the rape of a child, after allegedly manipulating minors into sending explicit images of themselves, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

The prosecutor alleges the man contacted children aged 10–14 on social media, posing as a friend, and used coercive tactics to obtain sexual material. He is accused of meeting three victims in basement or storage areas, where one case escalated to rape.

The defendant admits to some of the charges, which include 29 counts of sexual abuse of a child, 18 illegal threats, and distributing explicit images of minors. A psychiatric evaluation is ongoing.

Manipulative communication and financial incentives

Prosecutor Kati Alkula-Kovanen stated the man used encrypted messaging services and multiple aliases to approach children, initially requesting non-explicit photos before escalating demands. He allegedly exploited some victims’ athletic backgrounds, requesting images of their abdominal muscles for sexual gratification.

In some cases, he sent children explicit images of himself or offered money in exchange for meetings. One child received cash after an encounter.

Defence acknowledges partial guilt

Defence lawyer Riitta Laakso confirmed the defendant admits to some offences but did not specify which. A court-ordered psychiatric assessment, initiated in February, remains incomplete. The man was arrested in August 2025 and has no prior convictions in Pirkanmaa in the past decade.

The trial’s preliminary hearing was open to the public, but proceedings will otherwise be held behind closed doors. Authorities suspect additional victims may emerge as investigations continue.
