Faroese public housing agency regains control of construction projects

The Faroese public housing agency Vinnuhúsið will resume direct oversight of its construction projects, director Niels Winther announced Monday, while criticising past mismanagement by private contractors. The decision follows warnings from economists about an overheated housing market, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Winther stated that construction must proceed without disruption to ease housing shortages, but stressed that previous agreements with the private firm Bústøður would be terminated. “The public sector must retake control,” he said, acknowledging that high costs and excessive demand have made new housing unaffordable for many.

Economic analysts have highlighted persistent oversupply issues and inflated prices as key barriers to accessible housing in the Faroe Islands.
