TikTok became a key battleground in Denmark’s election campaign
Social media platform TikTok played a significant role in Denmark’s recent election campaign, with political parties and candidates using the app to reach younger voters, DR reports.
The Liberal Party (Venstre) and the Social Democrats were among the most active, posting short videos to promote their policies and engage with users. Venstre’s leader, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, shared clips addressing economic issues, while Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of the Social Democrats used the platform to discuss welfare and climate policies.
Opposition parties like the Moderates and the Socialist People’s Party also joined the trend, with some candidates going viral for their creative or humorous content. The Moderates’ leader, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, posted a video answering user questions in a casual format, while younger candidates experimented with memes and challenges.
Analysts noted that TikTok’s algorithm favoured quick, engaging content, forcing politicians to adapt their messaging. Some videos received thousands of views, though critics questioned whether the platform’s fast-paced nature allowed for meaningful political debate.
The election saw a slight increase in youth voter turnout, though it remains unclear how much influence TikTok had on the final results.
