A new project is investigating whether tidal energy combined with advanced battery technology could replace oil-based electricity production on three Faroese islands, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The initiative, led by Swedish energy developer Minesto—headquartered in Vestmanna—is being tested in collaboration with Faroese energy company SEV, Danish firm Capture Energy, and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL). The project has received 25 million Swedish krona (approximately 17 million Danish kroner) in funding from the Swedish Energy Agency.

Terji Nielsen, innovation manager at SEV, stated that the study aims to determine if a small, self-sufficient energy system could reliably supply power to small islands in the Faroes and abroad. A battery storage facility will be installed at Fjørður in Vestmanna on land leased by Minesto.

Minesto has previously conducted tidal energy trials in Vestmannasund, the strait between Streymoy and Vágar.
