A government-appointed working group has recommended that Denmark double its number of conscripts, national broadcaster DR reports. The proposal comes amid growing concerns over national security and defence readiness.

The working group, tasked with reviewing Denmark’s conscription system, suggests increasing the annual intake from the current 4,700 to around 9,000 conscripts. The recommendation is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities in response to evolving security challenges.

If implemented, the expansion would require additional resources, including training facilities, personnel, and funding. The proposal also includes extending the duration of basic military training to ensure conscripts receive adequate preparation.

The Danish government has not yet announced whether it will adopt the recommendation, but defence officials have signalled support for increasing conscription numbers as a necessary step to bolster national security.
