Ski resort forced to close due to lack of snow
A ski resort in western Norway has announced it must close for the season due to warm weather and snowmelt, calling the situation “simply sad,” reports NRK.
Sunnmørsalpane Skiarena Fjellsætra in Sykkylven municipality stated on social media that recent mild temperatures have severely reduced snow levels, leaving insufficient coverage to keep the slopes open. “We unfortunately don’t have enough snow to maintain operations any longer,” the resort wrote in a Facebook post.
The facility had previously scaled back evening skiing earlier in the week, citing concerns that further snow grooming would accelerate melting. “Our goal was to stay open on weekends for as long as possible to make the most of the season,” the post read.
With no natural snowfall forecast, the resort now faces an indefinite closure, effectively ending its season. “A spring holiday without snow in the mountains is just sad,” the operators wrote, acknowledging they have no control over the weather.
Webcam images from the site show largely bare ground where slopes would normally be covered. The resort had held out hope for a late-season recovery but confirmed it would remain shut until conditions improve—an outcome that now appears unlikely.
