A local politician in Denmark has resigned from her position, citing the emotional toll of attending council meetings alone after her party lost all other seats in the 2021 elections.

Speaking to public broadcaster DR P4, the councillor—who was not named—said she no longer wished to sit alone in the municipal assembly hall. “I will not sit alone in the meeting hall in the future,” she stated, explaining that the isolation had become unbearable.

The politician had remained the sole representative of her party following the last local elections, leaving her without colleagues in the council chamber. While she did not specify which municipality or party she belonged to, her resignation highlights the challenges faced by lone councillors in Denmark’s local government system.

Under Danish law, parties that fail to meet the electoral threshold can still retain a single seat if they receive sufficient votes. However, holding office without party support often proves difficult in practice.
