A 1990s-born man suspected of murdering an elderly man in Helsinki’s Malminkartano district has multiple prior convictions for violent crimes and drug offences, according to Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The stabbing occurred late Wednesday evening near Malminkartano train station on Luutnantintie street. The victim, a man born in the 1940s, died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts. Police described the attack as “particularly brutal and cruel,” involving both a bladed weapon and severe physical violence.

Authorities confirmed the suspect and victim had no prior connection. The suspect, currently in custody, is set to appear before a court on Saturday for a remand hearing.

Court records show the man has been convicted repeatedly between 2019 and 2023. In 2023, he received over two years in prison for two counts of aggravated assault and minor payment fraud. Earlier convictions include drug offences, illegal possession of weapons, and assault. In 2022, he was given a suspended sentence for drug use, assault, and firearms violations, while in 2020, he was fined twice for drug-related crimes and possession of dangerous items, including a metal-tipped baton and ecstasy tablets containing MDMA.

In 2025, he faced charges for reckless fire handling after starting a blaze in his apartment while smoking in bed, though no additional penalty was imposed beyond his existing 2023 sentence.
