Faroe Islands national hospital switches to district heating

The Faroese national hospital, Landssjúkrahúsið, has completed its transition to district heating, becoming the largest customer of the country’s district heating company, Fjarhitafelagið, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The hospital complex, comprising 25 buildings with a total floor area of 50,000 square metres, previously consumed the equivalent of 350 single-family homes in heating oil annually. The switch to district heating is expected to reduce its oil use by one million litres per year—a 78 percent decrease.

Construction to connect the hospital to the district heating network began in September last year. The final phase of the project was completed on Friday along Frælsin, a main road in the capital Tórshavn, where roadworks had temporarily disrupted traffic. Bus services, which had been rerouted, will resume their normal routes from Saturday.

The roadworks on Frælsin were initially scheduled for completion in February but faced delays.
