Finland’s Security Intelligence Service (Supo) is openly recruiting intelligence officers for the first time, but applications must be submitted exclusively by postal mail, Yle reports. The agency cites security concerns as the reason for the unusual requirement.

The service is seeking “human intelligence officers” to gather critical information for national security through direct interaction with individuals. According to Pekka Hiltunen, head of Supo’s intelligence division, the role involves collecting classified data that cannot be obtained through other means.

Russian and Chinese language skills are considered a strong advantage, as these countries are identified as the most active in espionage against Finland. Applicants must be Finnish citizens over the age of 18, though assignments may take officers anywhere in the world.

Hiltunen emphasised that the work is long-term and methodical, often involving extensive planning, research, and reporting—far removed from the high-action portrayal seen in spy films. Public recognition is unlikely, as operations and their outcomes remain classified.

The selection process includes a background check, and a criminal record or ties to organised crime could disqualify candidates. While Supo acknowledges the risk of foreign agents attempting to infiltrate the recruitment process, it states that safeguards are in place—though their specifics remain undisclosed.
