Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside Aarhus City Hall on Monday to protest the municipality’s proposal to cut 184 million kroner from social services, DR reports.
Protesters carried banners with slogans such as “Where are we supposed to go?” and “Vulnerability needs care, not cuts,” arguing that the planned savings would dismantle essential support systems. The city’s 98-page cost-cutting plan, currently under public consultation, has drawn 957 responses ahead of Friday’s deadline.
Melina Svensson, who credits a social support programme—now facing closure—with helping her rebuild her life, told DR that community networks are irreplaceable. “You can’t cut away people. These communities are what strengthen us, and we cannot afford to lose them.”
Birthe Windfeldt, a volunteer and board member at Kvindehuset—a centre for immigrant women offering language classes, counselling, and social activities—warned that services would be drastically reduced. “I hope they find savings that don’t target the most vulnerable in Aarhus.”
The cuts stem from Aarhus hitting Denmark’s serviceloft, a national cap on municipal welfare spending. Conservative city councillor Peter Sporleder, a member of the Social Affairs and Employment Committee, acknowledged the difficulty of the decisions. “It hurts to hear these stories. We’re cutting away parts of people’s lives, and that affects me.”
The final decision on where to implement the 184 million kroner in savings will follow the review of public feedback.
