A 20-year-old man is standing trial for murder after a high-speed crash in Tampere killed a 16-year-old boy and severely injured two others, Yle reports. Prosecutors allege the driver was travelling at over 170 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when the car veered off the road and struck a tree.

The crash occurred in the Kalkku district of Tampere in September 2024. The accused, who was driving without a valid licence, lost control of the vehicle while exiting a roundabout at excessive speed. The 16-year-old passenger in the back seat died instantly, while the two others suffered serious injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Prosecutors argue the driver must have foreseen that reckless speeding in an urban area could lead to a fatal crash, meeting the legal threshold for murder. They are seeking a minimum sentence of 10.5 years in prison on charges including murder, two counts of attempted murder, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, unauthorised driving, and drug offences. Traces of cannabis and cocaine were found in the driver’s possession.

The defendant denies the murder charge and attempted murder but admits to aggravated vehicular homicide and causing grievous bodily harm. His defence argues he could not have been certain that speeding would result in a fatal crash.

Speeding reached “absurd levels”

According to prosecutors, the driver picked up three passengers in Lielahti and drove through Tesoma toward a K-market in Kalkku on the evening of 28 September. Data from the driver’s phone and the vehicle’s systems show repeated extreme speeding, including 170 km/h in a 60 km/h zone and 120 km/h in a 30 km/h area.

The prosecutor described the speed at the roundabout—over 170 km/h in a 50 km/h zone—as “absurd.” The car was travelling at 100–130 km/h at the moment of impact. The driver attempted to brake but lost control, skidding sideways into a tree roof-first.

While toxicology reports confirmed prior cocaine and cannabis use, prosecutors stated the driver was not impaired at the time of the crash. They argued the reckless behaviour demonstrated a disregard for others’ lives, calling it fortunate that only one fatality occurred.

Mother’s message to the accused

During the trial, the mother of the deceased 16-year-old addressed the driver, saying, “You took my son’s life, but I don’t want you to lose yours to prison. Think about what you’ve done and change.”

The defendant testified that he had not intended to cause a crash, acknowledging the risks but stating he “never thought it would happen to me.” He claimed conversations about fast driving in the car did not influence his behaviour.

The Pirkanmaa District Court will deliver its verdict at a later date.
