Faroese seafarers unable to vote in general election
Faroese sailors currently at sea will be unable to cast their votes in the upcoming general election, despite having internet access, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Emil Nolsøe, a Faroese ship captain working on a Greenlandic vessel, along with six other Faroese crew members, will miss the election due to strict voting rules. Their ballots must be submitted physically before the polls close, but their ship will not return to port in time.
Nolsøe told KVF that the crew has reliable internet onboard, which should have allowed them to vote electronically. However, Hilmar Høgenni, division director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture, confirmed that current law requires physical ballots.
The sailors had already departed when the election was called and did not receive their ballots before leaving. Some will remain at sea until after the election, while others may return too late to vote in person.
