Finland, UK and Netherlands explore joint defence funding mechanism
Finland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are considering a joint defence funding mechanism to accelerate military investments, according to a statement from Finland’s Ministry of Defence.
The three countries issued a joint declaration published on the UK government’s website, stating that other allies may also participate, though none were named. The UK aims to establish the mechanism by 2027.
The Finnish Ministry of Defence said the proposed system would speed up defence investments, improve capability availability and support joint procurement. Discussions are driven by “significant changes in the security environment,” particularly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has heightened the risk of war in Europe and challenged the rules-based international order.
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (National Coalition Party) stated in the UK government’s release that Finland’s involvement in the talks allows it to influence the design of the mechanism. “It is important for Finland to participate in exploring the possibilities of this mechanism together with our allies,” he said.
The discussions remain preliminary, and any formal commitment would require national political approval, the ministry noted.
