The driver of a car that crashed into a shop window in central Turku on Monday evening was reaching for an item on the back seat when their foot slipped onto the accelerator, police have confirmed. No injuries were reported in the incident.

According to a statement by Southwest Finland Police, the case is now under investigation as a suspected aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. Communications specialist Katri Tammio told public broadcaster Yle that preliminary findings suggest the driver unintentionally accelerated while retrieving property from the rear of the vehicle.

The car had been stationary at a bus stop before the collision, which occurred just before 6 p.m. local time at a Deli Market grocery store on Eerikinkatu. The impact shattered the store window but caused no injuries. Authorities described the speed at the time of the crash as low.

Police have filed a criminal report and will continue examining the circumstances. “Current information indicates this was an accident, but the exact causes will be clarified during the pre-trial investigation,” Tammio said.
