The municipality of Kangasniemi has decided to rename its Autiotalojen asuntomessut (“Vacant House Housing Fair”) campaign following a demand from Suomen Asuntomessut (Finland Housing Fair Ltd), which argued the name caused confusion with its own brand, reports Yle.

The municipal board voted 4–3 on Monday to change the campaign name to Autiotalojen Messut (“Vacant House Fair”). The original term had received official approval from the Finnish Patent and Registration Office, as “asuntomessut” (housing fair) is not a registered trademark.

Municipal manager Kimmo Kainulainen stated that while Kangasniemi had strong legal grounds to retain the name, the council chose to avoid prolonged dispute. “In the bigger picture, it is not meaningful to continue this conflict,” he said, adding that the core idea of the campaign remains intact.

The initiative promotes vacant and for-sale properties in Kangasniemi to attract new residents. Yle previously visited one of the listed homes in November.
