Finnish skier dies after collision with rock in Jämsä ski resort
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) is investigating a fatal skiing accident at the Himos resort in Jämsä, where a middle-aged Estonian man died after colliding with a rock while skiing with friends, Yle reports.
The victim, a man in his 50s, was wearing a helmet and skiing with a group of Estonian friends when the accident occurred on Friday. Police confirmed no criminal activity is suspected, and the case is being treated as a routine death investigation.
According to police, the skier veered off a connecting slope and struck a rock. Investigators have interviewed witnesses, as other skiers were present at the time. The exact cause remains under investigation, though authorities have ruled out foul play.
Tukes is examining whether safety protocols at the resort were followed, including slope conditions and staff procedures. The agency last inspected Himos in January 2024 and found no deficiencies in slope safety. Resort management stated that the slopes were in normal condition for the mild weather at the time.
The accident occurred on a blue-rated (intermediate) connecting slope, a narrower 10-meter-wide section maintained nightly with grooming machines. Signage in the area advises skiers to reduce speed. Elsi Ojala, CEO of Himos Resorts, emphasized that skiers are responsible for maintaining control but added that the company would implement any safety improvements identified in the investigation.
Ojala noted that rocks near slopes are common in ski resorts and that no prior serious incidents had been reported at the location. The slopes reopened after a brief closure for initial investigations.
