Love chosen as Finnish matriculation exam essay topic sparks debate
The theme of love was selected for this year’s Finnish matriculation exam essay, prompting both praise and criticism among students, according to a report by Finnish national broadcaster Yle. While many celebrated the choice as refreshing, others questioned its relevance compared to topics like war, climate change, or artificial intelligence.
Students took to social media, particularly TikTok, to share their reactions, often accompanied by Anna Puu’s song Säännöt rakkaudelle (Rules for Love), which was included in the exam materials. Some praised the Finnish Matriculation Examination Board (YTL) for selecting a theme that inspired joy, while others expressed envy that future test-takers might not get the same topic.
Critics argued the subject was too abstract, leaving little room for substantive discussion. The YTL’s examiners have since addressed questions about the test on the Abitreeni study platform. Students who participated in the exam are now being asked to share their experiences—whether they found the theme surprising, well-chosen, or disappointing.
The Finnish matriculation exam, a national standardized test for upper secondary school graduates, often features contemporary or socially relevant themes. Past topics have included technology, environmental issues, and societal changes.
